Centred Care is an NDIS-registered provider. NDIS-registered providers can provide disability services to NDIS Participants who are NDIA-Managed, Plan- or Self-Managed.

NDIS-registered providers are organisations or individuals that are registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, as per section 73E of the National Disability Insurance Act 2013. NDIS-registered providers are required to meet the NDIS Practice Standards and Quality Indicators and adhere to the NDIS Code of Conduct.

Approved Quality Auditors conduct regular NDIS audits against the NDIS Practice Standards. All relevant policies, procedures and documents are assessed. The auditor interviews the NDIS Provider’s Key Personnel, selected staff and NDIS Participants. NDIS Participants have Choice and Control to be part of the audit process. NDIS Participants have the right to exercise Choice and Control when it comes to using their NDIS Plans. This means that you choose who delivers your NDIS supports, and when or how these supports are delivered.

NDIS Plans are individualised funding packages that allow you to purchase the services you require, so you can receive the supports you need to achieve your goals. They are intended to offer you more Choice and Control over the services that are supporting you in your daily life.

Choice and Control starts from the presumption that people with disabilities have the capacity to make their own decisions and exercise choice and control. The intention behind this presumption, is to allow for the dignity of risk. Appropriate supports can be offered where needed, to ensure NDIS participants take informed and reasonable risks.

So, while informal supports (such as family or friends) or formal supports (such as NDIS and mainstream services) can support you in providing guidance, you remain in control of your choices when it comes to your NDIS services.

It is your right to have more than one NDIS provider for your supports. It is your right to terminate services if you feel your NDIS provider is not acting in your best interest or is not supporting you to achieve your goals.

You cannot be forced to purchase more services than you want, and you cannot be forced to provide more personal information than required to deliver supports.

According to the Australian Human Rights Commission, one in five Australians has a disability. This blog aims to inform you about your rights and protections, and what supports are available should you experience discrimination.

In 2008, Australia ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The CRPD follows the human rights model of disability, which means it recognises that disability is a natural aspect of humanity.

The CRPD promotes, ensures and protects the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and freedoms of people with disabilities. It protects you against discrimination and include the right to accessibility, inclusion and participation in the society, autonomy and equality. It includes the right to dignity and respect.

Sadly, many people with disabilities have experienced situations where they were not given the same opportunities as others or were treated less favourably than others in similar situations.

In Australia, it is unlawful to discriminate against people with disabilities.

The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 protects you from discrimination in areas of public life such as:

  • Education
  • Accommodation
  • Employment
  • Accessing public places
  • Accessing goods and services
  • Clubs and associations

If you are experiencing discrimination and feel safe to do so, you may wish to speak to the people involved, or perhaps their supervisor or manager. However, there may be situations where you’re uncomfortable to do so, where it doesn’t resolve the situation or where you feel an official complaint is warranted.

When experiencing discrimination, it is your right to lodge a complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission. You can download the complaints form: Read More.

If you’re discriminated against by your NDIS provider, you may wish to lodge a complaint with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, by phoning 1800 035 544.

Disability Advocacy Services are funded by the Department of Communities, and may be able to assist you with the challenges you are facing. You can find a list of Disability Advocacy Services: Read More
